Socal Cyber Cup
Case Study
Role: Event Coordinator and Live Production Coordinator
Deliverables: Convert the 2020 and 2021 SoCal Mayor’s Cyber Cup into a 100% virtual event.
The Outcome: Successful back to back annual SoCal Mayor’s Cup events
The Challenge
In 2020, the San Diego chapter of the Nation Defense Industry Association (NDIA) approached us needing to figure out a way to maintain an already planned Middle/High School/College Cyber Security competition soon after the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns occurred. We continued our work with them for the May 2021 SoCal Mayor’s Cup due to social distancing restrictions still in place for in-person activities.
Our Approach
In 2020, we worked with the event organizers to pivot their awards ceremony to a virtual event. We walked them through the whole process of modifying an in-person event into an online one. This event integrated 15 speakers (live and recorded content) and involved live award announcement and interviews with the team captains of the winning teams. In 2021, we worked with event organizers to expand this event beyond just the awards portion. The day-long (7 hours) interactive event brought together industry professionals and technical experts and live game score updates. This was all integrated into a self-contained online platform that promoted sponsors, players, and educational institutions alongside the livestream.
The Impact
Both events were widely enjoyed by the sponsors, organizers, parents of the players, and the players themselves. Overall, both events allowed the students to continue to participate in the annual event and allowed NDIA to conduct it’s 11th and 12th annual competition despite the COVID-19 restrictions.
